Every new Magic: The Gathering set arrives in several sealed formats, and the two you will see most are Play Booster boxes and Collector Booster boxes. They share the same set, but they are made for very different reasons. This guide explains the difference so you can pick the right box.
What is a Play Booster?
Play Boosters are the main pack for most modern Magic sets. They are designed to be opened and played with, especially for Draft and Sealed games with friends or at your local game store.
- A Play Booster box usually holds 30 or 36 packs, depending on the set (for example, our The Hobbit Play Booster Box has 30).
- Each pack contains around 14 cards, with at least one rare or mythic rare.
- Packs also include a chance at foil cards and special treatments, but most of the pack is playable cards for your games.
Play Booster boxes give you the most packs and the lowest price per pack, which makes them ideal for draft nights, building decks and collecting the main set.
What is a Collector Booster?
Collector Boosters are the premium pack of a set, built for collectors who want the rarest and most beautiful versions of the cards.
- A Collector Booster box usually holds 12 packs.
- Each pack contains around 15 cards, and many of them are foils.
- Packs focus on special card treatments such as borderless, showcase and extended-art versions, plus multiple rares or mythic rares per pack.
- Some sets add exclusive treatments that only appear in Collector Boosters.
Collector Boosters cost much more per pack, but each pack is packed with high-end cards. They are not designed for Draft.
Play Booster vs Collector Booster at a glance
- Packs per box: Play 30–36; Collector usually 12.
- Price per pack: Play is far lower.
- Foils and special treatments: occasional in Play; the main focus of Collector.
- Best for: playing, drafting and set building (Play); premium collecting and chasing showpiece cards (Collector).
Which box is right for you?
If you want to play the set, host a draft or open lots of packs, choose a Play Booster box. If you want the flashiest foils and alternate-art cards, or a premium sealed box to keep, choose a Collector Booster box.
