If you shop for Panini or Topps hobby boxes, you will see phrases like “2 autographs per box” or “look for case hits”. These special cards are called hits, and they are a big part of why collectors buy hobby boxes. Here is what each type of hit means.
Autographs
Autograph cards are signed by the player. You will see two main kinds:
- On-card autographs, signed directly on the card itself. Collectors usually value these more.
- Sticker autographs, signed on a clear sticker that is then applied to the card.
Rookie autographs, often marked RPA (rookie patch autograph) when they include a patch, are some of the most sought-after cards in any release.
Memorabilia, relics and patches
Memorabilia cards (also called relics) contain a piece of material such as a jersey swatch or a piece of equipment. Patch cards contain multi-colored pieces of a jersey patch or logo and are usually rarer than plain swatches.
Parallels and numbered cards
A parallel is a version of a base card or insert with a different color, finish or pattern. Many parallels are serial-numbered, for example “/99” means only 99 copies exist. The lower the number, the rarer the card, and a 1/1 means it is the only copy in the world.
Inserts
Inserts are special sets that sit alongside the base set, with their own designs and themes. Some inserts are common; others are short prints that are very hard to find.
Case hits
A case hit is a card so rare that, on average, it appears about once per sealed case of boxes, and sometimes even less often. Collectors who buy single boxes can still pull one, but there is no guarantee.
How to read a box configuration
Manufacturers publish a configuration for each release, such as “7 cards per box” or “1 patch autograph, 1 other autograph and 2 memorabilia cards per box, on average”. Keep two things in mind:
- “On average” means some boxes will have more and some fewer.
- The player you pull is random. A box guarantees types of hits, not specific players.
