Walk into any card shop and you will see two sealed Pokémon TCG products everywhere: the booster box and the Elite Trainer Box (ETB). Both are full of booster packs, both look great on a shelf, and both are released for almost every main expansion. They are built for different collectors, though. Here is how to choose.
What is a Pokémon booster box?
A booster box is a display box of sealed booster packs from a single expansion. For most main sets in the Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution eras, a booster box holds 36 booster packs, and that is all it holds: no accessories, just packs.
Because you get the most packs in one product, a booster box usually gives you the lowest price per pack of any sealed product from that set. It is the go-to choice if you want to:
- Work towards completing a set.
- Open a lot of packs in one session and chase the set’s top rare cards.
- Keep a sealed box from a set you believe in as a long-term collectible.
What is an Elite Trainer Box?
An Elite Trainer Box is a premium collector’s kit built around a smaller number of packs. Contents vary by set, so always check the listing, but a typical ETB includes:
- Around 9 booster packs from the expansion.
- A themed set of card sleeves.
- Basic Energy cards, damage-counter dice and condition markers.
- A player’s guide to the expansion.
- A sturdy storage box with dividers you can reuse for your collection.
- In many recent sets, an exclusive promo card.
You pay more per pack than with a booster box, but you get a box full of extras and some of the best artwork of the set on the packaging.
Booster box vs ETB at a glance
- Packs: booster box around 36; ETB around 9.
- Price per pack: lower in a booster box.
- Extras: none in a booster box; sleeves, dice, Energy, guide, storage box and often a promo in an ETB.
- Best for: set builders and pack openers (booster box); gifts, new players and display collectors (ETB).
Which one should you buy?
Choose a booster box if your goal is opening as many packs as possible for the best value, or completing a master set. Choose an Elite Trainer Box if you are buying a gift, getting into the game for the first time, or you love the accessories and the promo card. Many collectors buy both: a booster box to open and an ETB to keep sealed.
Whichever you choose, buy sealed products from a seller you trust and check the packaging when it arrives. Our guide on how to check a factory-sealed box walks you through it.
